Individual (traditional) inspection scheme - testing witnessed by RINA surveyor

    What's individual (traditional) inspection scheme?
Individual (traditional) inspection scheme is the final product acceptance step carried out by RINA surveyors at the manufacturer's facilities.

What's the purpose of the individual (traditional) inspection scheme?
The purpose of the individual (traditional) inspection scheme is to provide formal documentary evidence of compliance with classification requirements.

Which products is individual (traditional) inspection scheme applicable to?
Individual (traditional) inspection scheme is applicable to all products for which a test in the manufacturer's facilities is required by the classification requirements and or by the customer, prior of their installation on board.
Depending on the products, testing and certification may be compulsory.
In general products intended for ship's essential services are required to be tested and certified. Examples of such products are: hull plates and profiles, winches and windlasses, rudders, crankshafts, reduction gears, tailshafts, pressure vessels, valves.

    How to proceed?
In most cases, individual (traditional) inspection scheme includes both a design review (drawing appraisal) and a survey/witness of testing of the product.
The procedure consists of the following main steps:

    • Manufacturer's application
    • Preliminary approval of drawings, when required by the rules
    • Execution of factory acceptance tests under RINA surveyor's surveillance
    • Issuance of RINA test certificate

Alternative inspection schemes - testing delegated to manufacturers specially recognized for the purpose

    What are alternative inspection schemes?
Alternative inspection schemes are the final product acceptance steps, partially or totally carried out by manufacturers specially recognized for the purpose and periodically audited.

What's the purpose of the alternative inspection scheme?
The purpose of the alternative inspection schemes is to provide an efficient, practical and cost-effective method of certification of compliance with classification requirements.
Audits to the Quality Assurance System and tests of the product are periodically performed by RINA surveyors.

Which products is alternative inspection scheme applicable to?
Alternative inspection schemes are applicable to a subset of the products for which a test in the manufacturer's facilities is required by the classification requirements and or by the customer, prior of their installation on board.
Alternative inspection scheme I is applicable to products of primary importance and, in any case, not mass produced: the tests of the products are partially delegated to the manufacturer and attendance of RINA Surveyors during manufacturing is made according to an inspection plan previously established which include final tests.
Examples of products to which the scheme I is applicable are: steering gears, reduction gears, propellers, boilers and pressure vessels, electric motors for propulsion.
Alternative inspection scheme II is applicable to mass produced products: the tests of the products are totally delegated to the manufacturer.
Examples of products to which the scheme II is applicable are plates, sections, pipes, fittings, valves, pumps, actuators, compressors, elastic couplings, oil mist detectors, cables and switches.

    How to proceed?
In most cases, alternative inspection schemes include both a design review (drawing approval) and a testing of the product. The procedure consists of the following main steps:

    • Manufacturer's application
    • Preliminary approval of drawings, when required by the rules
    • Execution of factory acceptance tests according to the inspection plan previously agreed
    • Review of manufacturer's test reports
    • Issuance of RINA test certificate
