What's the Parent Engine certification?
Parent Engine certification is a procedure to be followed on the first of a series of identical engines to demonstrate that its NOx emission is within the limits of the MARPOL Annex VI Reg. 13 requirements.
What's the purpose of Parent Engine Certification?
The purpose of Parent Engine Certification is to get an EIAPP Certificate issued by RINA on behalf of the Flag Administration. In case of lack of information regarding the Flag Administration, a Statement of Compliance will be issued.
Which engines is Parent Engine Certification applicable to?
EIAPP Certificate, is required for each diesel engine with a power output of more than 130 kW which is installed on a ship constructed on or after 1 January 2000 and each diesel engine with a power output of more than 130 kW which undergoes a major conversion on or after 1 January 2000.
Emergency diesel engines, engines installed in lifeboats and any device or equipment intended to be used solely in case of emergency are exempted.
How to proceed?
The procedure consists of the following steps:
- Manufacturer's application
- Preliminary review of engine documentation and approval of engine technical file
- Execution of tests as per NOx Technical Code
- Review of the reports
- Issuance of EIAPP Certificate or Statement of Compliance
